The Illusion of Dominance
‘The Illusion of Dominance’ questions man’s relationship with nature. I am fascinated by how quickly nature recovers from the effects and constraints of humanity; how when things are abandoned, they are quickly engulfed by the natural world.
Focusing on greenhouses, I explore the illusion of human dominance. Greenhouses are curated perfect little worlds, reflecting an unnatural order of nature created and imposed by man of regimented rows of perfect little plants. Through entrapment, they reflect the illusion of man’s supremacy, but nature plays a waiting game, biding its time until abandoned and left alone; plants growing through floor sheeting, growing up walls and through glass ceilings, entwining and erasing everything that stood before.
Our impact on the earth is vast but seeing these greenhouses reclaimed by nature, makes me realise the strength of the natural world. In the same way, it also makes humanity seem very mortal and temporary to the earth; we are not as dominant as we wish to believe.
In the exhibition images were printed and displayed on different fabrics relating to each environment.
